News Item 05/18/07 – The White House and a bipartisan group of Senators reached a deal on immigration reform...

...part of which involves a 700 mile fence along the Mexico – United States border. So now we have George W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States as much as saying Mr. Chertoff, build that fence, almost ten years to the day, on 06/12/87, when Ronald W. Regan, 40th President of the United States admonished those pesky Communists by saying, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Ironic, ain't it?

Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico, in making his tri-lingual (English, Spanish, French) announcement for president yesterday said, " First, we have to recognize that no fence ever built has stopped history. And a border fence wouldn't either. If you build a ten foot fence, someone will use an 11 foot ladder." Now I don't know if he included all fences from history and the shark infested waters of Mirs Bay (don't tell the Republicans about that or the Rio Grande will be seeded with sharks with a taste for Mexican food), but I stand my ground on a border fence for United States: they can't build it long enough, deep enough or high enough to keep out anyone who wants to get in!! Cheers.

However, you do need the perspective and historical context.
You do know that the Chinese Emperor back a couple of thousand years ago or so (Don't know the exact date but you can look it up) built the Great Wall of China, for thousands of miles, to keep the Mongol Hordes out.
Today it is a tourist attraction.
Secondly, never mind the Berlin Wall of 1948 (when was it built?), but I bet you didn't know that the British, in their Crown Colony of Hong Kong, in about 1950 built a barbed wire fence on Hong Kong's northern border with China.
Thousands upon thousands of refugees were fleeing from the communist (read Mao) victory of the People's Republic, and they were literally flooding into Hong Kong.
The Brits had to do something to stop from being overwhelmed, so they built the fence.
This held the refugees back, but many of them tried to save their lives, with their families, by swimming across Mirs Bay, from the mainland to the British possession.
Only problem was with the sharks who had a feeding frenzy.
True story.
Only knew about it because we were there and as late as the 1970's people were still trying to escape from communist China by swimming across the bay.
Every morning they would find body parts washed ashore.
The sea of humanity yearning to be free.
Over
Gordon.
